How Three Lines Sit on the Reels
A 3 payline slot pays along just three routes, usually the top, middle and bottom rows. Most games here use a tiny 3×3 grid, the shape of an old pub fruit machine, while Red Tiger’s Five Star and Golden Cryptex spread their three lines across five reels.

Playtech’s music-themed game is one of the highest-returning three-line slots around, though its figure depends on the version: from 96% up to 97.49%. Diamonds are Forever 3 Lines
The purest game of the seven. Pragmatic Play lists a 96.96% return, there is no bonus round, and the Lucky 7 wild fills in for the other symbols. Most listings give a 3,000x top win, reached by filling the grid with sevens.
Christmas Gift Rush
Habanero’s festive game starts with only the middle row live. A win nudges a reel and switches on the top row, a second win adds the bottom row, and a third in a row raises the multipliers. A single spin pays up to 400x, and the wild nudges push the ceiling to 2,675x. It returns 96.66% at high volatility. Our Christmas slots page has more seasonal games.
Gladiator Clash
NetEnt’s 2024 arena game adds a fourth reel of prizes beside the 3×3 grid: three matching symbols pay whatever multiplier sits on that row of the prize reel, usually 1x but now and then up to 500x. Collecting 20 scatters in the meter above the reels opens the Lion Bonus. It returns 96.16% at its top setting, or 94.10% in its lowest version, and pays on about 12% of spins.
Digipays
A clever retro idea from Wizard Games: the reels show only digits and blanks, and a line simply pays the number it spells out, so 1, 0 and 0 across a row pay 100x. A gold coin on the third reel brings three respins with every number held in place. It is medium volatility and starts at 10p a spin.
Golden Cryptex
Red Tiger’s puzzle game puts three lines on a 5×3 grid styled as a code cylinder. Its features are Cryptex Cash, up to ten Golden Spins and a Second Chance respin. Five Star
A fruit-machine game on five reels with three lines, where three, four or five Five Star symbols pay an instant prize, up to 300x for five. Red Tiger lists a 95.20% return and a 2,000x ceiling, and some casinos show 96.20%. It is a different game from Five Star Power Reels, which uses eight reels. Small Grids, Big Swings
Three lines look gentle, but they mean fewer ways for a spin to win. Red Tiger’s own figures put Five Star’s hit rate at 10.78%, and Gladiator Clash lands a win on about one spin in eight. On a 20-line game, by comparison, a win often comes every third or fourth spin.
That is why most of these games rate high or medium-high volatility. Long dry runs are normal, and the money comes back in fewer, larger wins.
Twists That Change How the Lines Pay
Modern studios keep the three-line look but change what a line is worth. Gladiator Clash sets the prize per row from a separate reel, Digipays pays the digits you see, and Christmas Gift Rush unlocks its lines one win at a time. Diamonds are Forever is the exception, a plain three-line game with a fixed paytable.

When a Lower RTP Pays a Bigger Top Prize
Digipays shows how far versions can differ. Wizard Games publishes three: 96.04% with a 3,086x top win, 94.04% with a higher 3,242x, and 88.02% with 2,474x. A bigger ceiling on a lower version is not a better deal, because the average cost still rises.
At the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over, 600 spins average about £119 an hour on the 96.04% version, £179 on 94.04% and £359 on 88.02%. At the £2 limit for players aged 18 to 24, those become roughly £48, £72 and £144. Single sessions can end far from these averages, so the version shown in the game’s rules is the number to look for.
