High Volatility slots

High-volatility slots pay out less often but in bigger amounts: most spins return little, and the bulk of the return waits in bonus rounds that can take a couple of hundred spins to land. Money Train 4 reaches 150,000x the stake, while Big Bass Bonanza shows the same label can come with a 2,100x top.

High Volatility

Volatility describes how a slot spreads its return, not how much of it there is. The studio sets it alongside the RTP and usually publishes it as a word or on a scale of its own. There is no shared standard, so one studio’s “high” can sit close to another’s “medium”. The figures below show what the label means on games many UK players already know.

How High the Well-Known Games Can Pay

Game Top win Where the top win comes from RTP Studio
Money Train 4 150,000x The Money Cart bonus round and its 21 modifier symbols 96.10% Relax Gaming
Wanted Dead or a Wild 12,500x Three bonus games, plus DuelReels multipliers of up to 100x 96.38% Hacksaw Gaming
The Dog House Megaways 12,305x The Raining Wilds free spins 96.55% Pragmatic Play
Book of Dead 5,000x Free spins in which one chosen symbol expands across the reels 96.21% Play’n GO
Gates of Olympus 5,000x Multiplier orbs of 2x to 500x that land during tumbles 96.50% Pragmatic Play
Big Bass Bonanza 2,100x The fisherman wild collecting money fish in free spins 96.71% Pragmatic Play

The top-win column shows that the label is about timing rather than size. Big Bass Bonanza keeps its real prizes for free spins and still stops at 2,100x, while Money Train 4, on the same list, can climb about seventy times higher. What the six have in common is that the large wins come late and all at once.

Bonanza Megaways shows the other side of it. Big Time Gaming gives it a hit rate of 37.94%, so more than a third of spins pay something, yet it is still a high-volatility game: most of those wins are small, and the 26,000x top depends on the free-spins multiplier building up.

Several of the newer games in our catalogue reach further still. Captain Death and Waylanders Cup each list a 100,000x top, but both are Valkyrie Studio games played only at Stake, a casino that does not take players from the UK.

How Long the Wait for a Bonus Can Be

Studios seldom say how often their bonus rounds trigger, so the useful figures come from long runs of tracked play. On Dead or Alive 2 the free spins have landed about once in every 195 spins, on Legacy of Dead once in 170 to 190, and on Bigger Bass Splash about once in 87 over roughly 12,000 spins. Nolimit City is one of the few studios to print its own number, one free-spins round per 278 spins on AFK Airport Security.

Those are averages, and the gaps around them are uneven. At one bonus in 195 spins, roughly one run of 200 spins in three ends without any; at one in 87, about one run in ten still does. Ordinary wins keep arriving in between: roughly three spins in ten pay something on Dead or Alive 2 against about one in six on Bigger Bass Splash, though most of those base-game wins are small.

What a Session Costs on Average

The table runs 200 spins at different stakes through a game returning 96.38%, as Wanted Dead or a Wild does at Hacksaw’s top setting:

Stake per spin Total staked over 200 spins Average kept by the game
10p £20 72p
50p £100 £3.62
£1 £200 £7.24
£2 £400 £14.48
£5 £1,000 £36.20

Those are long-run averages, and a high-volatility game reaches them in an uneven way. An ordinary session tends to cost more than the last column, and the occasional session with a big win is what brings the average down to it. The table stops at £5 because that is the most a UK-licensed casino may take on one slot spin from a player aged 25 or over; anyone younger is held to £2.

One Game, Several Return Settings

Like most studios, Hacksaw ships Wanted Dead or a Wild in more than one version and lets each casino choose. Its page lists four:

RTP version Kept per £100 staked
96.38% £3.62
94.55% £5.45
92.33% £7.67
88.42% £11.58

On the lowest setting the same game costs more than three times as much to play as on the highest, and nothing on the reels gives that away. Push Gaming likewise lists Razor Shark at 96.70% and at 94.06%. The paytable or information screen of the game at a given casino states the figure it runs, and on a game built around long waits that figure is worth checking ahead of a session.

Some studio pages add a separate, higher figure for buying the bonus round outright. That purchase is not offered at UK-licensed casinos, so for UK play only the standard version counts and the free spins come from the scatters alone.

High Volatility Next to Medium and Low

Medium-volatility games give up some of the ceiling in exchange for steadier play. Wolf Gold from Pragmatic Play returns 96.01% with a 2,500x top, and NetEnt’s Twin Spin 96.55% with 1,000x. Games in that middle band usually pay small and mid-sized wins more often, so a balance tends to last longer between features. Our medium-volatility slots page lists the rest, and the low-volatility slots page covers calmer games, Starburst and 1429 Uncharted Seas among them, whose top wins stay under 1,000x.

High volatility fits a player who has set an amount aside, can watch it go without a bonus, and wants the chance of one large win more than time on the reels. Someone hoping to make a small balance last an evening will usually get more of that from a medium or low game at a similar return.

FAQ

Keeping Control on a Game Built for Long Waits

The hardest moment on these games is a long run without a bonus, when carrying on can feel like the way to win back what has gone. A spending limit and a stopping time chosen before play starts, and kept to, protect a balance better than any choice of game. Accounts at UK-licensed casinos include deposit caps, session reminders and cooling-off periods, and they are easiest to use when set up in advance.

A free GamStop sign-up locks a player out of every UK-licensed gambling site together. The National Gambling Helpline, staffed by GamCare, answers on 0808 8020 133 day and night at no charge. Slots are for adults only, and nobody under 18 may play them.
