Pragmatic Play is the studio behind Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza and the Big Bass games, with more than 500 slots and a new one most weeks. Its best-known games mostly top out at a return of about 96.5%, and its UK versions come without the bonus buy.
Pragmatic Play builds its catalogue on a handful of mechanics that it repeats and refines: tumbling reels with multipliers in Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza, Money Respin jackpots in Wolf Gold, and the fisherman collect behind the Big Bass games. Most of its best-known slots are high in volatility and top out at about 96.5% RTP, and a new game arrives most weeks.

Pragmatic Play Studio Overview
Pragmatic Play was registered in Malta in 2015. It took on the TopGame development team and rebuilt the games, the look and the technology around its own HTML5 engine. Its head office is now in Gibraltar, with Julian Jarvis as chief executive and more than 1,500 staff across Malta, Gibraltar, Romania, the UK, India, Serbia and the Philippines; much of the slot development is done in Bucharest. A private investor group led by Veridian owns the business.
The UK licence sits with the Gibraltar company, while the Malta company answers to the Malta Gaming Authority for Europe. Pragmatic says its games are certified in more than 30 jurisdictions, Romania, Gibraltar and the Bahamas among them.
The studio’s edge is volume and reach. Its GO platform bundles the games with lobby tools, the Drops & Wins prize network and tournaments, so a casino can take the whole catalogue through one connection, and the weekly release pace keeps lobbies supplied between the big launches.
Mechanic DNA
Four mechanics run through Pragmatic’s most played games, and each has been carried into many titles rather than left in one hit. Wolf Gold, named EGR’s Game of the Year in 2018, made Money Respin the studio’s calling card, and Gates of Olympus did the same for tumbling multipliers after its 2021 launch.
Tumble Mechanic
After each win the winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in from above, and the chain carries on until a refill brings no win. In Gates of Olympus, Pragmatic’s own game page lists multiplier symbols of up to 500x that can land on base spins and in the free spins, and in the free spins each multiplier that lands on a win is added to a running total. Sweet Bonanza, Starlight Princess and Sugar Rush tumble too. Because the bonus rounds carry most of the return, base spins can go quiet for long stretches. Our cascading slots page lists the other tumble games we review.
Money Respin
Six or more money symbols on a base spin start three respins in which only money symbols can land, and each new one resets the count to three. Fixed jackpot tiers, typically Mini, Minor, Major and Mega, are tied to filling the screen. Wolf Gold started the format in 2017 and is still its model, with Mustang Gold and Drago among the games built on it. Players coming from tumble games tend to find the round easier to read, because the money values on screen show what it is building towards. The hold and win slots page groups rounds like this from every studio we cover.
Megaways
Pragmatic licensed Megaways from Big Time Gaming in 2020 and has since released more than 20 Megaways games, among them Buffalo King Megaways, The Dog House Megaways and 5 Lions Megaways 2. Each of the six reels shows between two and seven symbols a spin, for as many as 117,649 ways, paid left to right on adjacent reels. Wins tumble, and in many of these games the free spins add a multiplier that rises by 1x with every tumble. Their top settings sit at or just above 96.50%, and our Megaways slots page sets them beside other studios’ versions.
Cluster Pays with Random Multipliers
Cluster games drop paylines altogether: a group of at least five identical symbols joined across or down pays wherever it sits, on a 7×7 grid in Sugar Rush and Fruit Party. Both add multipliers as the tumbles run, up to 128x in Sugar Rush and 256x in Fruit Party. In Sugar Rush the multipliers sit on fixed spots of the grid, and each time a symbol is cleared from a spot its value doubles; in the free spins those values carry over from spin to spin instead of resetting. Base-game wins come more often than on payline games with a similar RTP. The cluster pays slots page has the full set we review.
Catalogue Map by Series & Franchise
Pragmatic grows its hits into families. A later game usually keeps the original’s core feature and either raises the top win or adds something on top, so a player who liked the first one knows roughly what the next one does.
Big Bass Bonanza family
| Game | Top RTP | Max win | Paylines |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big Bass Bonanza | 96.71% | 2,100x | 10 |
| Bigger Bass Splash | 96.50% | 5,000x | 12 |
| Big Bass Boom | 97.97% | 5,000x | 10 |
| Big Bass Rock and Roll | 98.00% (enhanced setting) | 5,000x | 10 |
The Big Bass games are made by Reel Kingdom and released by Pragmatic Play, and the family now runs to more than 15 titles. Every one keeps the fisherman who collects fish values in the free spins. The later games lift the top win from the original’s 2,100x to 5,000x, and their top settings range from 96.50% on Bigger Bass Splash to around 98% on the newest. Our Big Bass slots page gathers the family in one list.
Gates of Olympus family
| Game | Top RTP | Max win | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gates of Olympus | 96.50% | 5,000x | The original: pay-anywhere tumbles on a 6×5 grid, multipliers up to 500x |
| Gates of Olympus 1000 | 96.50% | 15,000x | Multipliers up to 1,000x and three times the top win |
| Gates of Heaven 1000 | 98.01% (enhanced setting) | 15,000x | Multipliers of up to 1,000x that build up through the round |
Pragmatic’s page for the original lists 96.50% and pays 8 to 30 matching symbols anywhere on the tumbling reels. Gates of Olympus 1000 keeps that formula and the same three settings, 96.50%, 95.51% and 94.50%, and changes only the multiplier ceiling, which is what triples the top win.
Sugar Rush family
| Game | Top RTP | Max win | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sugar Rush | 96.50% | 5,000x | The original: cluster pays with multiplier spots on a 7×7 grid |
| Sugar Rush 1000 | 96.53% | 25,000x | Multiplier spots up to 1,024x instead of 128x |
| Sugar Rush Super Scatter | 96.58% | 50,000x | Same 7×7 cluster grid, ten times the original’s top win |
Two routes lead on from the original. The 1000 version raises the multiplier ceiling, and Super Scatter keeps the grid while lifting the top win to 50,000x, the highest ceiling of any Pragmatic game we review.
John Hunter series
The John Hunter adventures put one explorer through a run of different features. Tomb of the Scarab Queen uses expanding mystery symbols in its free spins, and the series also takes in John Hunter and the Aztec Treasure, John Hunter and the Mayan Gods, John Hunter Tomb of the Mad Pharaoh and John Hunter and the Book of Tut, a 10-line book-style game with a 96.50% top setting and a 5,500x top win. It suits players who want new features without leaving a familiar character.
Best-Known Pragmatic Play Slots
These seven are the studio’s most familiar games, and between them they cover each of its main mechanics. The figures are each game’s top setting.
| Game | Top RTP | Volatility | Max win | Mechanic |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gates of Olympus | 96.50% | Very high | 5,000x | Tumble with multiplier symbols |
| Sweet Bonanza | 96.49% | High | 21,100x | Tumble with candy multiplier bombs |
| Big Bass Bonanza | 96.71% | High | 2,100x | Fisherman collect |
| The Dog House | 96.51% | High | 6,750x | Sticky multiplier wilds |
| Sugar Rush | 96.50% | High | 5,000x | Cluster pays with multiplier spots |
| Wolf Gold | 96.01% | Medium | 2,500x | Money Respin with jackpots |
| John Hunter and the Tomb of the Scarab Queen | 96.50% | High | 10,500x | Expanding mystery symbols |
Gates of Olympus
For many players Gates of Olympus is simply what Pragmatic Play means. Its 6×5 grid pays for 8 or more matching symbols anywhere, multiplier symbols land on the tumbles, and in the free spins those multipliers build up across the round. Its 5,000x top win is well below Sweet Bonanza’s, but no other Pragmatic game shows the tumble-and-multiplier formula as plainly. It comes in three settings, 96.50%, 95.51% and 94.50%, and the info screen inside the game shows which one a casino runs.
Sweet Bonanza
Sweet Bonanza has the highest top win of the older hits, 21,100x the bet. It uses the same pay-anywhere tumble as Gates of Olympus, with candy multiplier bombs worth 2x to 100x in the free spins, and its 96.49% top setting is a hair below Olympus’s. Players who rate the ceiling above everything else have the newer Sweet Bonanza 2500, which raises it to 25,000x.
Big Bass Bonanza
Big Bass Bonanza has the highest top setting of the seven, 96.71%, and the lowest ceiling, 2,100x. Pragmatic rates its volatility 4 out of 5, a step below Gates of Olympus, so its swings are a little gentler than the biggest tumble games’. Three scatters trigger the free spins, and there the fisherman wild collects the cash value of every fish on screen. The round is easier to follow than a tumble bonus, and the format has carried a whole family of sequels.
The Dog House
The Dog House is a 5-reel, 20-line game with a 96.51% top setting and a 6,750x top win. In its free spins the wilds stick where they land and carry 2x or 3x multipliers, and wilds on the same line multiply together, so three 3x wilds make 27x. Our review of The Dog House Megaways covers the later version, which reaches 12,305x.
Sugar Rush
Sugar Rush matches Gates of Olympus on the headline figures, 96.50% and 5,000x, but its clusters connect more often than pay-anywhere tumbles in the base game, which makes it a gentler way into the studio’s high-volatility games. The multiplier spots do the heavy lifting in the free spins, and both later versions in the family build on them.
Wolf Gold
Wolf Gold is the template for every Money Respin game the studio has made. Its single 96.01% setting is below Pragmatic’s usual 96.50%, its volatility is medium and its top win is 2,500x. What it offers instead is a feature you can follow, with the money values and three jackpot tiers on screen while the respins run.
John Hunter and the Tomb of the Scarab Queen
Tomb of the Scarab Queen is the John Hunter game with the biggest ceiling, 10,500x, at a 96.50% top setting and high volatility. In the free spins, expanding mystery symbols all turn into the same symbol for the round, which is where the large line wins come from.
RTP Configuration Map
Most of Pragmatic’s well-known slots come in three settings, and the casino chooses one. On the standard ladder they are 96.50%, 95.51% and 94.50%, and games with a higher top move the ladder up a little. The info screen inside the game shows which setting a casino runs, and it is worth opening before any money goes in.
| Game | Top setting | Lowest setting |
|---|---|---|
| Gates of Olympus | 96.50% | 94.50% |
| Sweet Bonanza | 96.49% | 94.49% |
| Big Bass Bonanza | 96.71% | 94.50% |
| The Dog House | 96.51% | 94.50% |
| Sugar Rush | 96.50% | 94.50% |
| Sugar Rush Super Scatter | 96.58% | 94.52% |
| John Hunter and the Tomb of the Scarab Queen | 96.50% | 94.50% |
Wolf Gold, from before the ladder became standard, is listed with a single 96.01% setting. At the other end, some recent releases run well above the ladder: Big Bass Boom lists 97.97% on its standard version, and Gates of Heaven 1000 lists 98.01% on its enhanced setting.
The gap between settings is what costs money. Gates of Olympus at 96.50% holds back 3.5p in each pound bet, averaged over many thousands of spins; at 94.50% it holds back 5.5p, 57% more for the same game. No single session shows the difference, because short-run swings swamp it, but over many sessions it adds up.
Volatility Profile
Pragmatic’s catalogue leans hard towards high volatility. Most of its hits sit at high or very high, and only about one game in ten rates low or low-medium. Long dry spells are part of the design: a high-volatility title can go more than 100 spins without a bonus, and that is the maths at work, not a fault.
| Volatility | Examples | What it means for a balance |
|---|---|---|
| Medium to medium-high | Wolf Gold, Mustang Gold, Great Rhino | Money Respin features spread the return more evenly, so the balance moves less sharply |
| High | Sweet Bonanza, Big Bass Bonanza, The Dog House, Sugar Rush, Starlight Princess, John Hunter and the Tomb of the Scarab Queen | Most of the catalogue; the base game runs quiet between bonuses |
| Very high | Gates of Olympus, Buffalo King Megaways, Gates of Olympus 1000, Sugar Rush 1000 | Bigger multiplier ceilings bring wider swings both ways |
Wolf Gold and the other Money Respin games are the calm end of the studio’s range. Steadier games from other studios are on our low-volatility slots page, and the high-volatility slots page sets Pragmatic’s big swingers beside everyone else’s.
What an Hour Costs Under the GB Stake Caps
The table shows what one game, Big Bass Bonanza, costs an hour in the long run at its top setting of 96.71% and its lowest of 94.50%, at stakes up to the two GB caps: £2 a spin if you are under 25, and £5 from age 25 up.
| Stake per spin | Hourly cost at 96.71% | Hourly cost at 94.50% |
|---|---|---|
| £0.10 | £1.97 | £3.30 |
| £1.00 | £19.74 | £33.00 |
| £2.00 (cap under age 25) | £39.48 | £66.00 |
| £5.00 (cap from age 25) | £98.70 | £165.00 |
The sums assume 600 spins an hour, a brisk mobile pace: hourly cost = 600 × stake × (1 − RTP). At £1 a spin the lowest setting costs £33.00 an hour against £19.74 at the top one, about two-thirds more for exactly the same game. These are long-run averages. On a high-volatility slot one session can run well ahead of these figures or drain a balance much sooner.
Playing Pragmatic Play Slots in the UK
Pragmatic’s games reach UK casinos under the licence held by its Gibraltar company, either through the studio’s own GO platform or through aggregators that bundle several studios into one feed.
The UK versions differ from those sold elsewhere. Bonus buys are not offered in Great Britain, so the UK builds leave them out, while versions for other markets keep the option at 75x to 100x the bet, depending on the game. Taking out the buy changes neither the RTP nor the base game, only the shortcut to the free spins. UK builds also run without autoplay or turbo spins, and each spin takes at least 2.5 seconds.
Most games without a jackpot have a free demo. A demo on another site can run the studio’s default setting rather than the one a particular casino has chosen, so the info screen in the casino’s own version is the one that counts.
Pragmatic Play vs Play’n GO
Of the studios in UK lobbies, Play’n GO is the closest match to Pragmatic. Both supply most of the big casino groups, both put out new games almost every week, and both lean towards high volatility. The table shows where they part.
| Point | Pragmatic Play | Play’n GO |
|---|---|---|
| Slots | More than 500 | More than 300 |
| Signature mechanics | Tumble, Money Respin, Megaways | Expanding symbols in the Book of Dead mould, plus cascading cluster grids |
| Volatility | Mostly high, a few low | Medium to very high, mostly high |
| Top RTP on the best-known games | About 96.50% | Roughly 96.15% to 96.59% |
| Lowest settings | Commonly about 94.50% | Down to around 84% on some games |
| Bonus buy | Outside the UK only | Not built in any market |
The biggest practical difference is the floor. A Pragmatic game at its lowest setting usually still returns about 94.50%, while Play’n GO lets casinos set some games far lower, so its info screen deserves an even closer look. On mechanics, Pragmatic is the home of tumbles and Money Respin, and Play’n GO of Book of Dead-style expanding symbols and grid-cluster games. Our Play’n GO slots page covers that studio game by game.
Who Plays Pragmatic Play Slots
Three kinds of player get the most from the catalogue. Fans of big multipliers and high ceilings have Sweet Bonanza and the 1000 versions of Gates of Olympus and Sugar Rush. Players who like a feature they can follow have Wolf Gold, Mustang Gold and the other Money Respin games. And players who like something new have the release pace: anyone looking for Pragmatic Play slots online will find a fresh game most weeks, with a new Big Bass title every so often.
It suits fewer players who want low volatility, because the studio makes few such games, and none who want a bonus buy in the UK, where its games do not have one.
FAQ
Yes. The studio’s Gibraltar company holds the Gambling Commission licence under which UK casinos offer its games. A second company, based in Malta, carries the Malta Gaming Authority licence that covers Europe.
Among the long-running games, Wild Depths has the top setting at 96.72%, just ahead of Big Bass Bonanza at 96.71% and Aztec Bonanza at 96.56%. Some newer releases go further: Gates of Heaven 1000 lists 98.01% on its enhanced setting and Big Bass Boom 97.97%. The setting a casino actually runs shows in the game’s info screen.
They don’t. Bonus buys are not offered in Great Britain, so the UK versions of Pragmatic’s games come without them. Versions for other markets keep the buy, priced at 75x to 100x the bet depending on the game.
Of the Pragmatic games we review, Sugar Rush Super Scatter tops the list at 50,000x the bet, ahead of Better Barn House Bonanza at 35,000x and a group of 25,000x games that includes The Dog House Megaways 1000. Among the older hits, Sweet Bonanza leads at 21,100x. Ceilings like these describe the rarest outcome, not what a session is likely to pay.
Both release often and lean towards high volatility. Pragmatic has the bigger catalogue, more than 500 slots against more than 300, and is built around tumbles and Money Respin, while Play’n GO is known for Book of Dead-style expanding symbols. Play’n GO’s lowest RTP settings go much further down, so checking the info screen matters more there.
Pragmatic Play’s about page says its games are tested by Gaming Laboratories International, Quinel and Gaming Associates, and each game’s info screen states its return. If a result looks wrong, complain to the casino first; a UK casino has to point you to an independent dispute service if it cannot settle the matter itself.
Staying in Control on High-Volatility Slots
Pragmatic’s games pay much of their return in occasional bonus rounds, so long losing runs and sharp swings are normal, and a casino’s lower RTP setting raises the long-run cost further. A budget and a stop time chosen before play hold up better than decisions made mid-session, and UK casinos put deposit limits, reality checks and time-outs in their account settings.
